Ashcombe Under 15 girls - 3rd in England - 30th March 2008

A great victory over Wessex 25-12, 25 15 followed by a close 1-1 draw with Newcastle, Staffs and another 1-1 draw with Nunthorpe took Ashcombe to a semi final place against Tameside. A close fought match v old rivals Tameside saw captain Hannah Carey lead her team with determination and great team spirit. Sian Warren and Georgia Bird blocked and attacked with confidence and setters Emma Mountford and Beth Taylor kept the team attacking.

Under 18 Women reach the finals - 9th March 2008

The Under 18 squad did not lose a set all day beating St. Edwards, Mavericks and Tameside in pool matches and Wessex in the semi final. Tettenhall Tigers took Tameside to a close semi final but Tameside took the match 2-1 to take their place against Ashcombe in the final. Both matches will be played at Bath University on Sunday 27th April. Confident setting by captain Beth Lowney and power hitting by Jess Grimson, Luana Mequiati and Jessie Forrester were key in Ashcombe's success.

Under 16 girls reach the finals - 8th March 2008

Captained by Izzy Fumagalli, the Ashcombe Under 16 girls team beat Tameside B and Mavericks to reach the semi finals and then beat Tameside 2-1 to reach the final. They will play Madeley in the finals, the only team to beat them in the pool matches. Outside hitters Hannah Carey and Luana Mesquiati attacked and blocked with strength shiowing variety in their net play shots. Middle blockers Georgia Bird and Sabrina Farley played a key role in net defence. Beth Taylor took on the role of Libero for the first time and took control of the defence.

Under 18 Men lose in National semi finals - 9th March 2008

Victories over Richmond and Newcastle Staffs but a loss in the pool match against Wessex took Ashcombe to a semi final place against Boswells. Despite good teamwork and fine team spirit the Ashcombe side were unable to beat the well organised Boswells team. Captained by Rafael Ferro the skillful Ashcombe team fought hard to reach this level. Hitters Rob Pennifold, Karol Kowalski and Arturo Medellin were given plenty of attack options by setter Marc Richardson.

Under 14 girls fail to reach the semi finals after not losing a game - 2nd March 2008

Beating Devizes and Denby both 2-0 and 1-1 draws against both Boswells and Tameside was not good enough to take the Under 14 girls through to the semi finals stages. The team was playing in the toughest pool of the competition with new recruit Abbey Peters playing her first ever games. Consistent serving and good team work by players Georgia Bird, Megan Warren and Sian Warren were key features in their success.

Under 14 boys reach the last 18 competition - 1st March 2008

Ashcombe's Under 14 boys team comprising of Tom Wardell, Harry Bird, Mark Stewart and Jacob Little found the competition tough and although they failed to reach the final stages, gained valuable experience for future competitions.

Under 15 girls reach last 8's - 2nd February 2008

Victories against St. Edwards and Richmond 2-0 were enough to take the Ashcombe Under 15 girls team forward to the finals in the Midlands on Sunday 30th March. The team were beaten 2-1 by Boswells and both teams now go through to the final stages. The team are working on their "attitude" for the next round. Captain Hannah Carey lead the team with drive and determination and newly discovered setters Emma Mountford and Beth Taylor gave good shape to the game. Strong serving by Georgia Bird and Sian Warren and steady passing by Chrissy Chaplin, Amy Potkins, Fleur Charman and Megan Warren helped the team to victory.

 

 

Under 18 Boys win all games 2-0 to reach last 8's at Keele University - 20th January 2008

Three confident 2-0 victories against Epsom College, Latymer and Tendring take Ashcombe Under 18 boys through to the last 8's at Keele University on Sunday 9th March. Rafael Ferro captained the team that also reached the semi finals last year and together with Arturo Medellin, Rob Pennifold, Jimmy Carey, Greg Warren, James Scott, Karol Kowalski, Marcin Kolodziej and Luke Wiltshire.

Ashcombe Under 16 boys lose in the 2nd round at Boswells, Essex - 26th January 2008

The new and inexperienced team failed to reach the final stages but took sets off both Clement Danes and Tendring to show how much progress they have made. Captained by Kieron Gillard, whose serving was a key to Ashcombe's success, the team was able to attack on equal terms with their opposition. Jimmy Carey and Greg Warren showed strong attack and block options and led the way for their team's success.

South East round - Under 14 girls - 26th January 2008

Georgia Bird, Megan Warren and Sian Warren, all from Durrington High School, Worthing, won all their matches 2-0 to progress to the National last rounds to be held at Ernest Bevin School, Tooting, London on Sunday 2nd March 2008. The 2nd team, made up of players from St. Pauls School, Burgess Hill came 3rd.

South East round - Under 14 boys - 26th January 2008

Ashcombe entered 3 boys teams in the competition and the 1st team of Adam Wardell, Harry Bird, Mark Stewart and John Watkins, from Durrington High School, won 5 out of 6 games to come 2nd in the tournament and qualify for a final place behind St Thomas More School.

Ashcombe Under 16 girls knock out Wessex and St Edwards teams - 19th January 2008

The Under 16 girls competition was a series of close fought matches with Boswells, Wessex and Ashcombe all beating one another. Ashcombe however took a set when losing to Wessex and beat Boswells and St. Edwards 2-0 to go through as top team with Boswells second. Setters Lucy Pierce and Izzy Fumagalli kept the team together and confident serving, passing and attacking by Hannah Carey, Sabrina Farley, Beth Taylor and Georgia Bird took the team through. Emma Mountford, Megan Warren and Sian Warren made confident first appearances in the National Competitions and now go to Nottingham on 8th March for the last 8 competition.

Under 18 Girls win through to last 8 finals in Nottingham - 13th January 2008

Beating Boswells, London Lynx and Wandsworth Borough, all 2-0, a strong and confident Ashcombe team go through to the last 8 competition. With all the squad under 17 or younger the junior squad still have plenty of time playing in junior competitions ahead of them. Captain and setter Beth Lowney played a leadership role, serving and setting with confidence and inspiring her team to victory. Chantelle Bashford, Nara Hassanova, Jess Grimson and Jessie Forrester were able to attack with confidence and Hannah Carey and Sabrina Farley both blocked and passed well. Susan Hoare was able to run fast attacks through the middle zone. Other squad players were Maria Frost and Georgia Bird who both played their part in the victories.

Ashcombe Under 16 Boys host 1st round of the National Cup - Saturday 8th December

A new young Ashcombe team went through to the second round of the Under 16 National competition. Opposition teams were: St. Clement Danes, Tendring, Waltham Forest and Chadwell Heath. The competition began with Ashcombe losing 2-0 to a strong Chadwell Heath team but beat Tendring B 2-0 and the games were 1-1 v Waltham Forest and 1-1 v St. Clement Danes with Ashcombe going through on points.The players come from the junior club that train on Monday evenings 5 - 8.00.p.m. at Durrington High School, Worthing.

Ashcombe Under 16 and 18 Tournament - 3rd November 2007

Held at The Ashcombe Volleyball Centre in Dorking, Surrey 12 teams competed for the Under 16 and 18 titles. Ashcombe girls won both Under 16 and 18 titles beating TASIS in the Under 18 final and St. Edwards in the Under 16 final. TASIS won the boys final.

 

Ashcombe Under 13 and 15 Tournament - 6th October 2007

28 teams entered the junior tournament held at Ashcombe VC. Winners: Under13 girls - St. Pauls School, Burgess Hill. Under 15 girls - Ashcombe pinks, Under 13 boys - Hillingdon, Under 15 boys - Team Southampton. The tournament was used as a talent identifiaction competition to look for new players for the South east squads.

Seven Ashcombe Junior players selected for England training - September 2008

Six female and one male player have been selected for England training this autumn. Jimmy Carey was selected at a trials held in Oxford on 6th October. Hannah Carey, Jess Grimson, Nara Hassanova, Susan Hoare, Jessie Forrester and Beth Lowney have been selected for training with the England junior squad who are holding most of their weekend sessions at The Ashcombe Volleyball Centre this year.

UK School Games 2007

Susan Hoare, Hannah Carey and Jess Grimson with the National trophy won by South at the UK School Games in August 2007. Ashcombe players Beth Lowney and Jessie Forrester were also members of the Under 16 team that reached the finals of this new National Competition beating teams from the Midlands, Scotland and Ireland and losing to North England in the finals.
