Ashcombe v Polonia 2011
A five set win against Malory Eagles on Saturday lifted Ashcombe clear of the regulation zone at the mid point of the season. The team have struggled to convert talent to points this year but their win in London is a clear sign that things are improving.
The team will face a tough challenge in the New Year when they face the top three ranked teams in the first two weeks back, however with continued improvements in play the team could be looking to upset the newly promoted high flyers when they travel to the South to face the Dorking side.
The first round of Ashcombe's journey in the Under 18 Women's National Championships was played at St Thomas More School, home of Croydon Volleyball Club. The team was without Alex Standifird and Georgia Bird, playing for Ashcombe Dorking 1 in the Super 8 match against Malory, but was still strong enough to win every game 2-0. Convincing wins over American School London, Richmond and Croydon takes Ashcombe to the second round at Wessex on Sunday 15th January. Sophie Szyszko set with growing confidence and Sian Warren, Isi Liebchen, Maddie Titus and Kristen Erickson showed real power at the net. Lauren Joyce's blocking was awesome and along with Megan Warren they snuffed out most attacks. Daisy Haynes and Taina Bedeschi both served and attacked with confidence leading to a real squad performance. By the time Georgia and Alex arrived from their successful win over Malory the competition was won but the two players still had the energy to help Ashcombe win the last match against Croydon.
